Do not drop bearing cups. Needle bearings can
be easily lost. Failure to comply will cause
damage to equipment.
NOTE
Installation procedures are the same for all
steering shaft U-joints. This procedure covers the
U-joint attached to the steering column shaft.
(1)
Install cross (34) into steering shaft yoke (37).
(2)
Install bearing cup (36) into steering shaft
yoke (37).
Ensure bearing cup is aligned with steering shaft
yoke before pressing in with vise. Damage to
cross and bearing cups will result if forced into
yoke.
(3)
Place steering shaft yoke (37) in vise with 3/4-in. socket between vise jaw and bearing cup (36).
(4)
Press bearing cup (36) into steering shaft yoke (37).
(5)
Install other bearing cup (36) into steering shaft yoke (37).
(6)
Place steering shaft yoke (37) in vise with 3/4-in. socket between bearing cup (36) and vise jaw.
(7)
Press bearing cup (36) into steering shaft yoke (37).
(8)
Repeat Steps (2) through (7) to install steering gear yoke (35) on cross (34).
Ensure grease fitting on cross faces yoke. Damage to equipment will result if grease fitting is
improperly installed.
(9)
Install grease fitting (33) on cross (34).
(10) Grease U-joints (TM 5-2420-230-10).
