COOLING SYSTEM - Continued
Hydraulic Oil Cooler
The hydraulic oil cooler is located next to the fan and radiator. This cools the hydraulic oil before returning it to the
reservoir.
Charged Air Cooler
The charged air cooler is located inside the left rear access door. This cools the air supplied to the engine to decrease
fuel consumption and emissions.
Fuel Cooler
The fuel cooler is located on the left panel in the cooling compartment. The fuel cooler cools the excess fuel not
used by the engine.
Surge Tank
The surge tank (Figure 27, Item 176) is located on the storage compartment cover and holds coolant to keep the
radiator full. Coolant level is checked and added at the surge tank.

Cooling System Operation
The cooling system includes the radiator, coolant pump (Figure 28, Item 177), and thermostat(s) (Figure 28, Item
178). Coolant is circulated from the coolant pump into the coolant passage adapter (Figure 28, Item 179) and
circulated around the engine oil cooler plates (Figure 28, Item 180). From the engine oil cooler, coolant flows into
the main coolant gallery (Figure 28, Item 181). From the gallery, coolant flows into the coolant jacket (Figure 28,
Item 182), around the cylinder liners, up through the block deck passages (Figure 28, Item 183), and into the cylinder
head. In the cylinder head, coolant flows through passages (Figure 28, Item 184) around the intake and exhaust
ports, valve seats, and injection nozzles. Coolant flows toward the front end of the cylinder head and into the manifold/
thermostat housing (Figure 28, Item 185).
